Songwriting

Being a good musical performer, especially a singer, is a great advantage in being a successful songwriter.

In the 1950's songs were written by specialist songwriters who were not performers, though they could no doubt privately perform their songs for evaluation and demonstation purposes. Many songs were written in Tin Pan Alley in New York. Songs were published in sheet music form and adopted by musicians for recording and performance.

In the present day the vast majority of songs are written by singers and other musicians who are already active in performing and recording. However, the vast majority of songs are unsuccessful. The measure of a great song is to have it performed by others.
